Founded in 1819 as the first Austrian savings bank, Erste Group has grown to become one of the largest financial services providers in the Eastern part of the EU in terms of clients and total assets.
When Erste Group decided to introduce an electronic access control system for its over 47 thousand employees, the era of secure RFID dawned on the company, together with LEGIC. The decision for LEGIC was based on stringent requirements such as a partner having a mature technology platform with broad industry acceptance and the use of standardized encryption algorithms which have been established on the market for a long time.
From the start, it was immediately clear that as a trusted, internationally operating bank there were unique security concerns. Because dependency on external ID card vendors introduces unacceptable security risks, it was decided that Erste Group would require its own security operating license for internal RFID card production. Due to the bank’s numerous locations in Austria and abroad, the RFID system would be rolled out over time, meaning they also needed a system that scaled easily over time.
In the end, the implementation of LEGIC advant-based ID cards based on the LEGIC Smartcard-IC CTC4096 was decided. This allowed Erste Group to gain independence over the provisioning, production and management of employee ID cards, allowing Erste Group to “own their own security”, a central part of LEGIC’s security philosophy.
New headquarters open up new possibilities
When Erste Group decided to move and upgrade their corporate headquarters, a new opportunity opened up to add additional functionality to employee ID badges beyond access control. Today, all employees have a standardized, contactless company ID card used for personal identification as well as for using many different applications.
One ID card - countless applications
Employees can use their company ID for identification on locks, turnstiles, doors, lifts, cloakroom cupboards, personal lockers, generally accessible storage lockers, in-house restaurants, time and attendance terminals as well as in high security areas requiring biometric identification. Depending on the security level of the area, either online or offline components are used. Employees may also use their ID card for secure printing of documents based on the cross-location, follow-me printing feature of the company ID card.
