Into the future with advant and the LEGIC CTC4096 Transponder Chip

The company E.ON SE focuses on renewable energy, energy networks and customer specific energy solutions. Based in Essen, Germany, the firm has approximately 40,000 employees at multiple locations around the world.

With its many different member companies, building security is an important topic within the E.ON group. The company has a multi-level security concept for its multiple sites and buildings, part of which is a unified access control system with staff ID used as the medium of identification. LEGIC prime-based RFID identification cards had been in use at E.ON for over 20 years – so it was high time to bring the technology up to the latest LEGIC smartcard standard - advant!

Everything began with LEGIC technology in 1995

The history of the RFID identity cards at E.ON began with access control and LEGIC smartcard technology in the year 1995. Starting first at isolated company locations, use of ID cards then spread throughout all facilities in Germany before being rolled out to subsidiaries in other countries.

An initial segment-based adaptation was carried out in 2013. Different access control and payment systems were integrated on the ID cards based on a LEGIC prime transponder chip. The system proved to be highly effective and user-friendly – but it was time to upgrade to the latest LEGIC smartcard technology: advant.

From prime to advant using the LEGIC Cross-Standard Transponder Chip (CTC)

The strategic goal was to introduce a secure medium for the future – with a clear cost structure, long-lifetime and a smooth transition from prime to advant. With partners Interflex, Dallmayr and evolutionID, LEGIC successfully developed an approach for the realization. It was decided to use an ID card with the LEGIC CTC4096 Transponder Chip which supports both prime and advant. The structure was conceptualized with “Zone C” together with one of the most advanced encryption technologies available - AES-256. In order to be ready for future developments in the software market, the segment list was supplemented by standards for access, time & attendance and payment systems.

Optimum realization

The realization was completed according to plan, and it was possible for the production of the new ID cards to start within a few months. All of the required goals were achieved with the new advant-based solution, resulting in a more secure and user-friendly experience for employees across all company locations.
