LEGIC joins the FiRa Consortium for UWB technology

Fusion of accurate position and contactless authentication heralds a new generation of access, IoT and mobility services

Swiss-based LEGIC Identsystems (www.legic.com), a leading enabler of contactless security solutions, has joined the FiRaTM Consortium (www.firaconsortium.org). FiRa, which stands for "fine ranging", brings UWB technology developers and service providers together to standardize and leverage Ultra-Wideband technology's unique ability to deliver unprecedented accuracy and security when measuring the distance to a target or determining position. The technology can be applied to users, goods, machines and vehicles, and is especially beneficial indoors where satellite positioning (e.g. GPS) is not available.

“LEGIC sees a promising future in the fusion of highly-accurate positioning with our globally-deployed contactless Security Platform”, said Christoph Beckenbauer, General Manager at LEGIC Identsystems, “The combination of technologies will result in a new generation of access, IoT, and mobility applications that can authenticate and deliver tailored, connected services to users and things based on their identity and location, securely and contactlessly. With our recognized expertise and experience in low-power, secure embedded as well as cloud-based connected applications, UWB will enhance an even greater spectrum of services.”

LEGIC is already collaborating with leading UWB technology providers to develop secure location-based solutions and reference designs for industrial processes, smart identity cards and smartphone applications for corporate users, as well as automotive and consumer applications based on mobile ID.
