LEGIC is IBM Business Partner for secure IoT solutions

LEGIC Identsystems Ltd becomes IBM® Business Partner and teams up with the company to provide an eco-system for end-to-end encrypted Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The portfolios of the two companies complement one another – this leads to attractive opportunities for manufacturers and operators. LEGIC is proud to be a Business Partner of such a renowned brand.

The LEGIC security portfolio and IBM with its IBM Watson™ IoT Platform and Bluemix™ offer a scalable and aligned eco-system with security elements for IoT applications and services. Thanks to this, operators and manufacturers profit from secure device registration and identification, operator entitlement as well as encrypted data management. The common IoT portfolios can be applied, for example, in the industry, building automation, M2M communication or in the healthcare sector.

“The brand IBM grants for digital intelligence, innovation and leadership in managed security services. We are proud to work as an IBM Business Partner. This gives us the valuable chance to extend our eco-system to the global IBM network,” states Rainer Troester, Senior Director Sales EMEA & Global Marketing at LEGIC.

LEGIC’s security contribution

The LEGIC technology is often chosen where security relevant considerations are of great importance. Secure IoT device identity and user credential deployment via the trusted service are elements of the platform. IoT-enabled devices based on LEGIC reader chips communicate via the mobile Software Development Kit - integrated in the iOS or Android apps - with LEGIC Connect. The latter provides a lean API for client back-end systems.

Sample scenario with IBM and LEGIC components

For the integration in the Internet of Things, an offline IoT device with a LEGIC security chip shall be registered in the IBM Watson IoT Platform, which is available as a service through IBM Bluemix. When a smartphone with a specific client cloud app is presented to the IoT device, the user is guided through a registration process with the IBM Watson IoT Platform. After the secure device identification, the trusted service LEGIC Connect deploys an encrypted authorization to the client cloud app which entitles the user to operate the IoT device. The uniquely identified IoT device communicates via an end-to-end encrypted channel to the client cloud and the Watson IoT Platform with its services in order to exchange data or to obtain software updates.

This showcase will be presented for the first time at embedded world 2016 in Nuremberg.
