One card for all applications

In the course of a program-based consolidation, the old time & attendance system had to be replaced and supplemented with an access control system. One of the project’s main goals was the replacement of the keys with LEGIC advant ID badges with which all of the applications are to be operated in the future.

KWS – the acronym stands for “Kleinwanzlebener Saatzucht” (seed breeding from Kleinwanzleben) – has been breeding plants for agricultural use for over 160 years. The company is now one of the leading producers of seeds in the world. KWS focusses on supplying modern agriculture with innovative varieties of seed for the production of food and animal feed products as well as regenerative raw materials for use in renewable energy.

Approximately 1400 employees work at the company headquarters in Einbeck. The company was seeking a new time & attendance and access control system with a good connection to SAP HCM. “We wanted the hardware and software from a single source,” explains Michael Müller, IT Manager at KWS Services Deutschland GmbH. “It was necessary for the system to be easy to use because we wanted to manage it ourselves.” KWS wanted to issue the authorizations and ID cards itself. In the end, the plant breeding company decided on Kaba.

Access control for the groupheadquarters
The group headquarters previously only had a locking system. KWS wanted to achieve comprehensive security, securing the external perimeter and providing controlled access to the buildings and facilities. For this reason, a comprehensive concept was developed for ten differing security areas. Following a brief project phase, the changeover to the new system took place. Previously, for time & attendance the Kaba B-COMM ERP subsystem as well as new time & attendance terminals had been installed; and for access control Kaba exos including the new access control hardware had been chosen. The system, which consists of 60 terminals and readers as well as 30 digital cylinders, has worked very well right from the start. The employees have since identified themselves with their ID badge on entering the company premises at online access readers that are located at the turnstiles and gates. The access points to the buildings as well as important interior rooms, such as the S1 laboratories in the secure area and the greenhouses, are also secured with online readers. Further rooms are secured by digital components.

“The Kaba system is easy to operate. It offers several functions and analysis options which make our work easier. We want to do as much as we can with this card.”
